In-vehicle navigation devices have traditionally utilized 2-D maps for guiding motorists along their desired routes. Turns are typically indicated by an arrow overlay on the map screen, or by audio commands prompting the driver when and where to turn.
Intersection images provide a more effective and less intrusive solution for vehicle navigation. One study concluded that landmarks provide more efficient navigation and are actually preferred by users. Another study concluded that pictures utilized in a navigation system resulted in better navigational instructions, were preferred by users, and were less intrusive to the driver than audio commands and map overlays.
Facet Technology Corp. is the clear leader in content creation for intersection images. Our inventory currently includes imagery of over three million intersections throughout the US. Each month, tens of thousands of intersections are added to our database. Pictures tell the story, and SightMap® provides the pictures that should become a staple in every vehicle navigation system.
Here’s a simple question - you’re traveling north on Las Vegas Blvd and wish to turn left on Stardust Rd. Which interface would you prefer for your in-vehicle navigation system - version 1, which shows a vehicle icon indicating your present location and direction, along with your desired turn -

or version 2, which shows a vehicle icon indicating your present location and direction, your desired turn, and an image of the actual intersection?
