Facet Technology Corp. Passes 2 Petabyte Data Storage

Eden Prairie, MN – February 2, 2009 - Facet Technology Corp. today announced that it has now collected more than 2 petabytes of data.

Steve Chapman, GIS Operations Manager, stated that “We have been collecting and storing huge amounts of data for 10 years now, but I never envisioned that we would pass the 2 petabyte barrier. Our data handling operations currently manage the collection and processing of up to 20 terabytes per day.” The massive data store is managed by proprietary software and hardware systems, and is increasing in size very rapidly.

Robert Laumeyer, CTO of Facet added: “As you can imagine you can't really go out and buy a low cost, high availability, easy to manage multiple petabyte data storage solution. Thus we had to create our own. The system is based on a lot of proprietary software and procedures that we have developed to handle such huge amounts of data”.

The data is a result of the collection efforts of the companies Mobile360® fleet. The vehicles each collect up to 3 terabytes per day. The data is all globally georeferenced, and has multiple indexes based on location, dates, and data types.

Facet Technology Corp., a privately held company founded in 1998, is a leader in large scale mapping technology and applications. Utilizing patented techniques and sophisticated mobile mapping systems, Facet has delivered precision mapping and property imagery content to a variety of customers since 2000.
