Facet Technology Corporation Announces Investment and Licensing Agreement with 3M

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, June 20, 2000— Facet Technology Corporation, a computer vision software and services company, announced today that Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M) has made a minority investment in, and has signed an exclusive services agreement with, the company.

Facet Technology Corporation (Facet) has developed a patent pending software application, SignFinder™, that automatically recognizes, locates, and classifies traffic signs in digitized video images. SignFinder™ processes tagged video acquired by road-based vehicles equipped with positioning systems (like GPS receivers) and one or more cameras.

“The service capabilities offered by Facet mesh quite well with our business objectives,” said Steve Steinke, Market Manager for 3M Traffic Control Materials Division. “Until now, no supplier has been able to achieve our project timing objectives. Facet Technology Corporation has shown us the solution we need to realize rapid project cycles.”

SignFinder™ is the first in what will become a full lineup of automated content-creation applications offered by Facet. “SignFinder™ removes the tedious actions from the content creation process, thus lowering costs, increasing accuracy, and saving time,” added Robert Laumeyer, Facet Technology Corporation Chief Technical Officer. “The turnkey services offered by Facet are very scaleable, thus allowing 3M to rapidly grow their new market segment.”
